The Hoophouse Handbook
Edited by Lynn Byczynski, 2003
An excellent resource for building and using a hoophouse or high-tunnel greenhouse. Covers sitting, building, design, materials, crop reports, winter production, and budget items. Includes construction details, manufacturer and supplier resources, charts, and photos. For hobby or professional produce and flower growers. 58 pages. Softcover.
Review:
For the serious greenhouse grower or market gardener, the hoophouse, or “high tunnel” greenhouse, has become not a luxury but a tool. The reasons are obvious: these lightweight component structures cost considerably less than a traditional greenhouse, can be moved if needed, allow growers to extend the season at both ends, protect delicate crops from the effects of wind and heat, and control variables important to quality. There’s also something to be said for raising fresh produce in the dead of winter.
The Hoophouse Handbook, edited by Lynn Byczynski, is a comprehensive 56-page guide to the selection, construction, and use of the modern high-tunnel greenhouse. Compiled from a selection of articles gleaned from the author’s monthly newsletter, “Growing for Market” (written for small farmers who direct-market flowers and produce), the paperbound work addresses winter production, crop selection, heating and ventilation requirements, siting and preparation, materials, building, and design issues.
The book includes charts and tables, line drawings, black-and-white photos, an index, and a complete resources list.
